About Project

According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs 2019 figures, Europe as a continent (82 million) and Turkey as a country (5 million) are home to the most number of refugees/immigrants in the world.

The results of two surveys conducted by KONDA Research Center over Turkey in February 2016 and July 2019 named 'Overview of Refugees’ revealed that negative attitude towards foreigners increased 50% in 2019 in respect to 2016. ’Global Attitude Survey’ conducted by PEW RESEARCH CENTER in the EU countries in the spring of 2018 showed that immigration opposition in the countries migrants try to reach most was between 58% and 82%.

As of 2019, there are 327.353 foreign students at high schools in Turkey and 327 of them are in Isparta. It’s inevitable that in classroom athmosphere there’ll be problems between foreign and domestic students since they come from different cultural backgrounds. While one group have to adapt to the conditions of a new country the other group have difficulty in understanding the traumas in the lives of newcomers.

To learn the level of harmony between native and foreign students at high school level, we conducted a survey for both of them in our school and province. As the result, foreign students stated that they were discriminated against, had difficulty in communicating with their peers, faced racism and bullying. Most of the native students also felt uncomfortable living together with their foreign friends and had a negative point of view towards them. It’s clear that these problems affect classroom athmosphere, interrupt teaching, distract students and affect learning process.

Therefore, we intend to decrease the problems of socially excluded refugees and prevent their intention to early school leaving. We will also create an awareness about diversity and non-discrimination and tackle discrimination, segregation and racism by including refugee and native students together to the mobilities and project activities at school.

We especially have established a partnership with Italy, Greece and Bulgaria because all of our partner schools' countries host refugees and they have the similar problems. We will arrange activities to promote the integration of refugees, asylum seekers and newly arrived migrants and raise awareness about the refugee crisis in our partner countries.

We especially wanted to carry this project to an international platform because as we mentioned before, we all have refugees in our countries and therefore we have lots of experiences to share with each other and to disseminate them to the other countries thanks to the erasmus+ programmes. We will have a continuing cooperation between different regions through e-Twinning and they will be able to see our good practices and we will be able to find a global solution for the problems we face about the refugee students.
